Sebastian Rucci Blog Holistic Therapy Programs at California Palms
Holistic therapy aims to restore the body’s natural harmony without the use of harmful toxins. Extended substance abuse has ravaged the physical health of many of our addiction patients to nearly irreparable levels. The holistic therapies at California Palms comprise several methods we utilize to begin strengthening our patients and helping them reclaim control over their health. These therapies can help to rebuild the overall physical wellness of those recovering from addiction, giving them the energy to focus on their substance abuse issues.
As much as holistic therapies are about rebuilding a patient’s physical health, they also focus on healing their mind and body as well. Total health is the ultimate goal of California Palms’ holistic program, which also includes life skills training, guided meditation, martial arts, yoga, Tai Chi, among many others. These therapies help address any underlying mental health issues that may have led them into substance abuse as a form of self-medication. In addition, long-term substance abuse can also be the genesis of many health problems such as depression and anxiety - that may respond well to holistic therapies.
Introduction to holistic therapies during treatment can also provide a tremendous benefit to individuals in the post-treatment phase of their lives. Many of these therapies can be continued by those in recovery on their own (or with minimal professional assistance) after they leave rehab, improving their overall wellness and helping them to resist the temptation of relapse into substance abuse. These techniques can actually help to form a strong foundation for living a happy, healthy, and meaningful life in the many years ahead, increasing the odds of long-term sobriety and healthy living for all who have gone through substance abuse treatment.

Meditation has been an essential part of physical, mental and spiritual healing in many cultures for thousands of years. Additionally, there have been multiple studies conducted that confirm the benefits of this practice in all areas of life - especially during addiction recovery. Regular meditation is a vital part of our rehab program at California Palms and it is also something many of our patients have made a part of their lives post-rehab. It’s a valuable tool in recovery, decision making and in the simple practice of finding calm and mental serenity.

Alcohol and drug addiction significantly impact brain-chemistry and the central nervous system. These consequences can be seen in how sufferers handle stress and adverse circumstances as well as in their diminished strength, coordination and focus. During their treatment, it’s critical that patients are exposed to therapies that help them improve their fitness, as well as their emotional and spiritual health. The California Palms offers Tai Chi as part of a comprehensive care program to help patients in their pursuit of total wellness.
The scenic natural environment of Mill Creek Park provides access to a rich experience of nature. There's something humbling about the park which inspires introspection and self-awareness. Being in nature allows us to take a step back from the stress of our routine and experience the calm of the environment around us. Nature therapy can help patients develop new perspectives and understandings about themselves during their addiction treatment. Nature therapy is an essential part of the holistic drug and alcohol rehab program at California Palms. It’s one of several healing techniques we use and one that has seen incredible success. Just being at the Park promotes the type of healing those in recovery need. When combined with all of our varied methods, therapies and strategies, experiencing nature can enhance one's treatment process and inspire real change and recovery.
Dr. Andrea D'Amato, a state licensed acupuncturist and chiropractor, is trained in acupuncture and uses acupuncture therapy to heal addiction, trauma and stress. Acupuncture has also been highly effective in relieving patients of certain withdrawal symptoms associated with detox, including nausea and reduction of minor acute pain. Chronic pain causes people to overuse and abuse painkillers to the point of addiction. To break this cycle, patients at California Palms are educated on numerous drug-free pain management techniques, like acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice dating back thousands of years, acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles in specific locations on the body (and at various depths), including in several key pressure points. Many continue to experience pain relief from acupuncture.
The healing benefits of aromatherapy can be felt in a variety of ways. It may give patients that much more control over their depression and anxiety, or it may help alleviate some of their more mild withdrawal symptoms. California Palms offers this widely-practiced therapy in an effort to give our patients every resource available to help them get past their addiction and mental disorder. The process is led by Shuana Krafft, an experienced professional that will match each fragrance to patients’ specific conditions.
Body-centered wellness incorporates a variety of physically healing activities to help patients manage their withdrawal symptoms and gain heightened awareness of the mind-body connection. Patients commonly adopt the tenets of body-centered wellness into their daily lifestyle once they leave treatment. Whether it’s taking up yoga, exercising regularly or practicing mindful eating, our goal is to positively impact our patients' overall health and make them aware of the very real link that exist between the brain and the rest of the body.
The California Palms Expressive Writing Therapy program gives patients an outlet to express their innermost emotions, thoughts, hopes and fears. Participants keep a journal, where they lay the foundation for personal growth through writing. Expressive Writing Therapy aims to help patients: Increase coping skills, recognize destructive trends in your thoughts and behaviors, improve your ability to express yourself honestly, raise self-awareness and confidence and establish post-rehab goals.
California Palms nutritional counseling gives patients invaluable insight into which foods to avoid and embrace during their recovery. Our goal is to help patients develop a lifelong plan for healthy eating. Once patients start eating right, they gain more and more energy and are better able to process the symptoms that accompany withdrawal. Proper diet combined with exercise helps quicken the body’s transition back to normal health.
